How Police Overtime Is Paid

Only constables and sergeants are paid overtime. Inspecting ranks and above take time off in lieu instead.

1

Standard: Time and a Third

Held past your shift to finish an arrest package or hand over a scene? You earn your hourly rate plus a third for the time worked.

2

Rest Days: Time and a Half

Called in on a rest day with under 15 days notice earns time and a half. With more notice you are given another rest day instead.

3

Public Holidays: Double Time

Working a public holiday pays double time, with a day off in lieu as well if you were given under eight days notice.

Overtime Lands Lighter Than You Think

Your basic salary already uses up your personal allowance, so overtime is taxed from the first pound, and at 40% once your pay passes £50,270.

How Police Overtime Pay Is Calculated

Your basic hourly rate is your annual basic pay divided across the standard working year. Standard overtime adds a third, rest days at short notice add a half, and public holidays pay double.

Overtime is not pensionable, so no pension is taken, but income tax and National Insurance still apply at your marginal rate.
